Transfer box / actuator understanding gen3

Hi there
Well.....mooing story short finally found a garage to look at my gen3 kzn185 3l td

The 4wd not working .....flashing lights but bugger all 4wd

Been told it's the actuator on the transfer box & new one is £750 plus vat

Now I'm no mechanic so trying to understand the theory here.....
Is it the actual actuator or is it the motor that activates it? I asked the garage but I'm getting mixed feelings here about them ....
Also wondering if it could be lack of vacuum that's not throwing it in ...

I press the 4wd button ( multi mode) so solenoid sends signal to vacuum pump & to the actuator motor which whirls everything into place?
Wish to hell I had the skills to sort this myself
