Hi,
I have a 1997 Diesel Surf (3.0 I think), VIN starts KZN185. I took minor side hit to the left rear tire and since have developed a very bad bumpy feeling. Mechanic says the left rear axle rod is bent and needs to be replaced.
He says I can pull the left side of the axle guts from the wheel to the differential or replace the whole axle. First is harder due to dealing with gears in the diff, pulling the replacement part perfectly straight, etc but (if the gearing is correct) it should be easier to find a used part because many years have the parts I need.
Other option is to replace the whole thing and then I only have to worry about the gearing in the differential. This is easier as there is less labor and I don't have to deal with gearing between the shaft and the differential. However, I'm finding that older model rear axles don't look like mine.
I found what I think is a 1994 diesel. My rear axle has the shock absorbers in front of the axle. The 1994 has the shock absorbers behind the axle. I don't know much about axles but this seems to be a non-starter. I also found a 1993 which also has the shocks behind the axle. I'm assuming the switch happened in 1996 per the chart located here.

From the VIN plates I have already figured out the diff gearing on my Surf is 3.58 and, I believe, the gearing on the 1994 is 4.1. So even if I could use the 1994 axle my speedometer is going to be off.
Can anyone tell me what years and models I can scavenge the whole axle from?
