Where is my thermostat?

I've just bought a new thermostat and expected the thermostat housing to be on either the other end of the top/bottom hose but no sign of it.
Can anyone enlighten me please, I've attached some pics.

Thanks but I don't see anything at the end of the bottom hose that remotely resembles a therm housing. It just goes into a metal pipe. Excuse my being dum but any more clues please ?
