  • Service Items

Hi guys found this forum a few weeks ago and its been really useful helping for look for a surf!

I've just got a Nice Gen 3 1996 Cream,120k,Underslung wheel.Besides that she's fairly plain jane. Will try to get some up soon.

Anyway whenever I purchase a vechicle such as this I allways go for full service and just wanted to check I've covered all the service items people with Gen 3 surfs generally do.I am far from being an expert on old jap import 4x4's!

    Oil Filter
    Air Filter
    Fuel filter
    (over £100 from main stealers!!!)

####s titan Syn MC 10-40 oil for engine
Millers millermatic ATF SPIII-WS and gearbox( only going to do the half change out for now)
I decided to leave the diffs and transfer box for now didn't see much about changing them on here?

Also going to get my mechanic to give the a good look over etc.But any other items I should get him to look at speific to these Surfs? Gen 3's esp?

Ahh also a quick question on 4wd setting!'s I'm fairly sure mine has the open diff option as it has the little yellow light in the middle of the 4wd thing in the middle of the clocks, From reading what people have said on here to select this mode I just click the 4wd button on the side without actually moving the stick? Even up to 60mph? And this should give me the setting where I can drive around in 4wd all day if I want without causing damage( I would have done this before if I didn't check here!!) Basically I want the 4 wheels to appear green and the yellow centre diff NOT to light up to be in open diff drive in the dry mode? :P If that makes any sense

    Thanks guys!

    Welcome cockney surfer!
Your right about the 4WD button, you press it and the four green lights come on, then you are in AWD, bit like a subaru or a rav 4. I wouldn't really use it on normal tarmac, mainly to keep fuel consumption down. Compared to other 4x4s the surf is stable and well behaved on the road, rear wheel drive is normally enough. Also I wouldn't spend that amount on filters, use Roughtrax or Milners, good quality stuff and a lot cheaper.
I would also totally bleed the cooling system, including heater pipes etc, and replace with a reputable make of coolant in the appropriate ratio. Unless you have a record of when this was last done.
    Enjoy.

hi there my friend,Are you actually in Malawi btw? lol

Ok just press the 4wd and i'm in the "safe" mode that i can if I want drive in around in the dry or if there's a little snow about or heavy rain etc...also when fiddling about with the button just to see how 4wd feels somtimes the ligths on the 4wd symbol flash for a bit then go out or go on depending on what I'm doing is this normal?

Yes I'm going to do a coolant change aswell I hate old coolant becomes acidic and eats away at gaskets!

      Thanks for the advise dude!

Fuel consumption is the same whether in 2WD or AWD.

Yes, definitely in Malawi, although could do with being somewhere cooler at the moment, the rains haven't yet come this year and the heat is unbearable...

Sure, the lights flashing on and off when you engage 4x4 or disengage it, is normal. Have a good play around with the Low Range, High Range etc, to familiarise yourself.
