Took the power steering pump off, it's basically undamaged. The 5 small plastic veins or whatever they're called (vacuum pump maybe?) are scored but steering was working okay. The injector pump drive cog is 100% fine, with no sign of damage at all. So I'll set about stripping the front of the engine off and see whats what.

Anyone shed some light on why this would happen? Where I can get replacement?

Could be a small piece broke off in there and you were very unlucky, it picked up and bust the rest..

With luck you'll find out when you find all the bits, I think I'd try and be certain you have ALL the bits....

    Good luck.

I turned the engine round by hand and the cogs are well battered. Thicker one has a fair few damaged teeth and about 3 basically missing. The thinner one has more damage and a area of 3/4-1 inch of teeth gone!

I once had a magnetic screwdriver end, some previous owner left in the rocker cover of a 3.0L Essex lump, battered the cam gear to bits...

          ###### hell. A hardend screw bit would do a good job of making a mess. This just happend all of a sudden, slight noise and then sort of went away. Then after maybe 500 miles or so the noise got rapidly worse. Obviously as the teeth were getting more damage done to them. Soon see more when I get time to strip the front off and see what I find!

Anyone else have a guess why this would happen? Or where I can buy the parts? Toyota's parts catalogue was down today, so they couldn't really help.

Toyota have managed to pluck their prive for these parts out the clouds. Just over £100 for thicker gear and £36 for the thinner one. Once I dig deeper there may be other damage and the usual like gaskets, oil/filter, coolant etc to replace as things go back together.

Anyone know if these parts are available else where or how much a bottom end would cist seconhand and I could use parts off that?

I have an engine block complete with pistons, crank and oil cooler still all attached. Some detonation damage to the top of the block but might be useful for parts from the pistons downwards. Has been sitting outside for a while, Yours if you want it though, I'm just outside of Morpeth, so not that far away from you

Ha ha. Yeah I know. But I was driving and asked my workmate to stick that reply up! I'm surprised there was nothing else done.

Could have been worse then...a friend and colleague of mine left his PC unlocked and another colleague mailed the whole company from his email, telling them he was to be known as Shirley after the operation...

Nice. He'll quickly learn from his errors with that one.
