  • fuel consumption again

I know its a FAQ but my 3.0td auto is only doing 17-18mpg driving very carefully! (my old LC80 used to do that)after doing a search I know it should do better what can I do to improve matters? Its on standard size road tyres.
Old enough to know better but then again.....

That does sound low. I get about 25mpg out of mine and I'm on 33" tyres. I used to get about 28mpg before I put those on.

Are you positive thats what you are getting?

When I first worked mine out I thought it was similar to that but I soon discovered that when my tank reads empty there is still about 15-20 litres left in the tank

You say driving carefully, but are you going fast enough to lock the torque converter? (over 55mph)
        ECT off?
Only use overdrive if you're going to be driving over 40mph.
What pressure is in the tyres? They needs to be 32psi.
        Is the air filter clean?
        Are the brakes dragging?

When mines working I average 23mpg, worst I've had is 20 and not done a long enough journey to find out best.

I thought o/d was only turned off when extra oomph was needed when towing?

The air filter is clean its mostly round town driving so not much chance of going over 40. Ect is off but overdrive is on. My Colorado changes up at around 1500 rpm round town, weighs nearly a ton more and is full time 4wd at 23mpg overdrive always on. Surf changes up at nearer 2000rpm is this about right? it does however have a ticking noise coming from the engine I don't know if its a bad injector (which might have something to do with it but the emissions are spot on MOT 2 weeks ago) or maybe a tappet?

Today I noticed that we have aquired a black smoke issue with added performance (TBO it seems like the turbo has started boosting more from 1800rpm ish) The extra power is welcome but all the black smoke isn't. Will blocking off the EGR help?
