OK, I give up. I'm sure this has been asked & answered many times before but I've tried searching the forums and just can't find it...

What kind of engine of oil for my 2001 IC turbo diesel Surf? What's the right grade for a temperate climate (NZ) and any recommendations for brands to go for or avoid?

I've just bought it and want to make sure everything is 100%.

theres not a huge amount of choice, 15w-40 diesel oil is the most common.
i would recommend gulfwestern J-power 15w-40 oil.

run of the mill 10w40 does fine for mine, dosent need any of the expensive synthetic stuff unless your rich enough, I just use mid range castrol 15w40 and change it around 8-10kms or when its getting a bit black.

Up in auckland that will work fine for you, down here in the south island I tend to change to a 5w30/5w40 when its particularly cold and snowing

I use Mobil Delvac MX 15w40, it's a proper (truck) diesel oil and meets API spec which is what Mr T specifies. If you buy it in a 20 ltr drum it works out less per oil change than the cheap own brands.

There's no mention of oil spec in my manual (which seems odd).

From what you guys are saying the answer varies between 5-40 and 15-40.

What is the official Toyota recommendation?
