hi guys, been a while since i have been on here. was just wondering if anyone knows if later model hilux diffs will fit under the surf as i have been offered one for a rather nice price. its a 2005 front diff and locker. the mounts look very similay to my ones, i already have a new hilux diff under it now that bolted straight on from a 2003 or there abouts.

It would be good to know this too, I don't know why more people don't put locking diffs on from other Toyota models onto the surf, no doubt its much cheaper than a decent aftermarket locker.
I like my surf over my Shogun in many ways its just a shame that the Shogun is at an advantage with its rear locker and LSD that actually works.

I blew my rear diff a while ago in my 3.0 and so when I found a new one going it was off a hilux and had hardly turned a wheel. Instead of just mucking around I removed the old diff and slotted my new one in. However it was a different ratio, better for my tyres as they are bigger. So I had the whole front end off the pickup and completely exchanged the whole diff unit. All mounts were the same and it even got rid off the stupid add rubbish that's on the surf. The drive shafts and hearing on it were also bigger and stronger. However as to Tue age of the truck I'm still stuck as it wasn't properly labeled. Might even be a late 90' s model. Some of these newer truck have diff locks and they are coming onto the market more and more. Really useful as ARB are charging 600 plus for one locker which to me by the time you pay vat is a stupid price. If I can get the front sorted then I'm looking to getting a Detroit from the states for the back.Completely bitten by the off road bug, and what better vehicle to do it in!

does this hilux front diff you installed have a different ratio to the rear diff?
wont that cause transmission strain when running in 4wd?

The hilux diff had a lower higher ratio better for pulling and bigger tyres. The rear unit bolted straight on from the hilux and the whole front diff assembly bolted straight onto the existing diff mounts. So I was running 33's with hilux diffs which brough the Speedo more in line with what it should be. My new front diff unit has arrived with stock Toyota difflock actuated electronically it seems and all the mounts are the same. That coupled with detroit from the states in the rear when its installed should give me some good traction. Got some 37" mickey Thompson claws too. But I can't build it up until after an operation.Completely bitten by the off road bug, and what better vehicle to do it in!
