  • Technical question on exhausts

Why does the auto box have a box on the tail pipe while the manual doesn't, is there a reason for this and what is it

    Thanks in advance

Often wondered about that myself, could be something to do with back pressure and engine braking on autos, or to keep noise down as its revs before a gearchange, but is only a guess.
Never been worried enough to research it!

Maybe it's about time someone did.

just noticed they are the same price,

how do I replace do I need any special tools or equipment?

Still would like to know if there was a reason cause if there isn't I could just use a bit of flexy exhaust from where it has snapped at the box.

Its just a resonator box, they mellow the exhaust sound nothing more.

On a 20 year old diesel engine like the Surf's, it doesn't make any difference to the way the exhaust sounds if you have a resonator box on the tailpipe or not.

It resonates luvelly with a side exit tho, ay Vince !!

Mine has no boxes and a 2.5 inch side exit...... It really isn't quiet but you get awesome turbo noises.
well, that was a bad idea!

I fitted the cheaper, non original, exhaust bought from rough Trax about 6 months ago. I didn't need any special tools and it was quite straight forward. However I wouldn't buy the cheap one again, it is badly corroded already and I don't expect it to last a year.

That was the one that I have priced up,
our local garage wants to look at my old exhaust cause there is no corrosion at all except where it has broke on the weld going into the box. He hasn't seen it yet, but says it could just be a bad weld and it might be a better quality of exhaust than the one I was looking at replacing it with.

                      Is it worth looking at?

I personally wouldn't by the cheaper exhaust again. I may have been unlucky with the quality build, I don't know what other's experiences are. Normally I have been happy with parts bought from rough trax. Like the saying goes "you get what you pay for".

My guess at the original question re back section sliencers.
The diesels are turbocharged which absorbs a lot of noise energy - the petrols are N/A and need the extra silencer.
                          Cheers,

Except the difference is between manuals and autos, not petrol and diesels
