Eureka!
Following forum advise I went to a tyre place and asked them to raise the truck to have a good look and a proper play around. The problem is the fat exhaust that the previous owner ( japanese chappie?)put on. It' s more than 3" almost all the way through. At some point just above the rear diff, slightly to the left you can see the spot on the exhaust pipe where the highest point of the ARB has been rubbing. Its smooth and shiny, really stands out. The mark is clearly visible on the corresponding site on the ARB too. I wrapped a 20 cm length of split cooling pipe around the bit of ARB that' s rubbing and kept it there with cable ties. Then tested the truck fully laden and clunk has gone. Turned into a much quieter little thud, but you only hear it with windows down.
Unfortunately there's little space to play about so the exhaust can't really be repositioned, its already almost touching the chassis at the top. Don't really want to ditch the exhaust coz its nice all the way tru, no rust...Maybe harder shocks? New springs? Raising kit? Or travel lighter...
Everything else looked ok, all ARB bushes and brackets look alright considering its a 16 yrs old vehicle. Same for Panhard rod, stabilizer bars etc. I suspect it wasn't really used offroad much in Japan. And just when it was hoping for a quiet retirement it found itself in Africa, with the worst, most corrugated tracks and pot holed roads...
Thanks to all those who posted their suggestions.
