...is it still worth cleaning the IP filter first?

Absolutely, it may or may not cure your problem.

Always check the basics first. K.I.S.S.

Removed the IP filter...little bit of crap but not enough to make me excited.
cleared any faults on the ecu.
Threw it all back together and fired it up ...excellent...for a few minuets and then back to running crap, just like fuel starvation so I floored it.......
stumbled up to about 2k revs, I held it there with clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust, until the engine light came on. Checked for faults.......fault 14.
Is this the kiss of death for the fuel pump? or could there be something else?
I'm going to whack the air hose in the fuel line again....I know, clutching at straws.
          Help me please

...Just blown the fuel line back to the tank...fired her up...no difference.
took the fuil line off the filter, the one to the injection pump and tried the hand priming pump.
No matter how much I pump the hand pump, I can't get fuel to pump out of it???
Surely it should pump fuel from the tank and shoot a jet across the engine bay?
            looking for help here guys

White smoke is usually water getting into a cylinder I believe..

Definitely no pumpage from the primer pump.
I fitted a facet, electric fuel pump on the line from the tank...copious amounts of fuel, no issue there. fitted the pipe from the tank to the filter head and pumped for about 40 steady pumps with the hose to the IP disconnected. Nothing.....is my filter head/primer pump knackered? would this affect the running of the engine? am I clutching at straws?

It sounds like the primer pump is broken. However, it doesn't need to work once the fuel has made its way through to the IP. Have you let it idle long enough to ensure the fuel is completely filling the system and then taking it out for a spin?

It all sounds too familiar to me and it ended up being the IP in my case.

If it is, find a good used one from a breakers unless you know a good injection specialist that can rebuild it. The ones I asked wanted to charge several hundred to test it!

                    fuel

                    hi
just fixed a car with same prob
turned out to be a small hole in pickup pipe
try putting a washing up bottle of diesel
into the input pipe on the pump if she runs
its the pick up in or going to the tank
may not be but worth a try

Thanks...I'll be trying that as soon as the rain stops...I'll try most things before changing the Injection Pump

Just to clarify, if all else fails, I won't be changing the pump...I'll be looking for some body local to do it...Any offers?
Preferably somebody with a spare injection pump for a 3rd gen 3.0Ltr

                        Latest update.....
Bypassed the primer pump/filter by using a dummy tank suspended above the engine......still runs like crap

I'm now thinking the worst...Injection Pump

It doesn't run too badly on tick-over but as soon as you give it some throttle it stutters, coughs and won't rev beyond 2000rpm. Accompanied by copious amounts of exhaust smoke.

                        three questions....

one) am I probably right, it's the injection pump?
two) has any one got a good injection pump for a kzn185?
three) anyone prepared to fit an injection pump for the correct amount of beer tokens?

                          reply

                          hi
have you try,ed a ecu if you can get somenoe to
cal at yer house take ecu off and try it on yours
but the standard 185 wont work on the 185 intercooler
one other thing you can try on the top of the pump
there is a push in conector start her up and while running
cut the left hand wire to the plug you can join it back up after
if it runs tidy then its the ECU that wire only needs to be connected
to start her up as it is only a pulse to start but if ECU is nackered
it will keep power to it
after all your probs worth a try
