  • I'm Worried

    Hi Guys,
having a worrying issue with my 3rd gen 3ltr diesel.
Owned it for about 4 very trouble 3 years but yesterday, strange things started happening. Flooring the accelerator and it starts hesitating and struggling until i back off and it starts behaving again. This happened a few times so when i got home, i changed the fuel filter assuming it was that.
This morning I tried to start it, It always starts within a couple of revolutions, not this morning
It fired just before the battery gave out.
I then took it for a spin to charge the battery, guess what.....
too much accelerator and it starts hesitating again.......I'm worried.
    Any idea's/suggestions guys ?

Clogged filter under the fuel temperature sensor on side of pump, or sucking air into the fuel lines through a leaky hose, or bad connection, Could also be the o-ring on the drain tap in the sensor on bottom of filter. Also blow some air through the fuel line from tank, back to tank, to clear any possible restriction in the tank filter.

      Thanks for the reply Nev...
I can do all that except the filter on the pump...I have no idea where that is??
Are there any pictures floating about? or an idiots guide for this idiot?

This morning I finally got around to looking at this problem...
Easiest thing first I thought. Air line down the pipe to the tank from the filter....
Nobody warned me that the breather in the fuel cap is one way.
Pressurised the tank and got covered in diesel as a huge jet came out of the pipe like a garden hose
Seems to have cured the problem.
        Checked the diagnostic codes....none.
Looking good, big test drive later, thanks for your help.

Is it? In that case remove the cap first.

              ...Really?

Anyhoo....Today...my woes came back with a vengeance. Barley made it 4 miles home
So thought I'd do the air line trick again after taking the fuel cap off first. Then drained the tank, fuel looked pretty clean. Shoved 20Ltrs in and fired her up...
b@ll@cks.... the same. I'll grab another fuel filter tomorrow.

              ...Any more thoughts Guys?......please

Does it rev up if you coax it up instead of WOT? I'd check the air intake system for leakrage engine side of the sensors...
                Whereabouts in Kiddy are you?

Do you have the orange engine light coming on?

I ended up replacing my IP (well Vince did) and that sorted my similar problem out. Cleared the lines and tank, little filter on the IP etc but the IP itself was the problem.

Anyway clean the little IP filter first... it's here... http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/showpost....7&postcount=16

Engine light does come on after a couple of minuets of struggling but goes off as soon as you release the throttle.

I'll try the IP filter tomorrow depending on rain/if I can find it/etc.

Could be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) going bad.

Does the engine rev cleanly in Park and/or Neutral?

Then it's definitely a pump issue.
Check that the electrical connections are sound/secure on the pump, reset the ECU by pulling the negative connection off the battery for five mins. then start it up and do the diagnostics again.
