  • Alternator problem - bit different..

Got my 3.0 running over the long weekend.

On start up all fine but after a minute all the lights come up on the dash.

I assumed it's the Alt as it's been standing for a while. Put on a spare and it does the same.

The Alternator is getting very hot at the back.

Got the voltmeter out. The big fuse is good,as is the charge fuse.

    Checked the manual :

    Ignition off:

Thick wire to battery - 12V

    Alt plug - White 12V
    Red 0V
    Yellow 0V

    Ignition on:

Thick wire to battery - 12V

    Alt plug - White 12V
    Red 12V
    Yellow 12V

So all measures right according to manual.

I don't think it's just coincidence that the replacement blew too. It seems to me that the Alt is shorting to earth.

Anyone had this happen or have an idea of what to check next ?

btw The truck came to me as a non runner so no way of knowing its history.

All 3 earths are good on the engine (2 thick ones below the steering pump and thermostat housing, small one on back of block)

    Cheers,
    Rob.

      Hi Tel,

No its showing battery voltage - 12.3V (ish)

Don't know if it was before the lights all came on.

      Cheers,
      Rob.

Thought I had it sorted but have just smoked another alternator....

Start looking for a decent mobile auto electrician I think.
