    Hi All,

Been working away from home for the last week so my truck has stood idle on the drive. She started and ran just fine before I went away but now find that my truck won't start at all. The usual click from the glow plug relay seems to have disappeared but could a dodgy relay be the cause of the problem? Truck turns over fine.....just won't fire.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried giving the fuel primer a good seeing to. ? As in pumped it till its hard. ( no double entendre intended)

      Thanks Bogus,

Yes that was one of the first things I checked actually. Plunger on top of fuel filter went down once very very slowly under constant pressure then wouldn't budge after that.

It just seems strange to me that the relay click has disappeared completely, but I wouldn't have thought faulty glow plugs (or a faulty relay controlling them) would have such an impact on starting in the mild weather we had yesterday.

If nothing more obvious crops up in the meantime, I'll try changing the fuel filter next.

Remove the fuel filler cap to let some air into the tank then see if the primer can be pumped again.

Do the dash lights come on with ignition as normal?

Yes all the dash lights seem to be there although prior to this problem the glow plug light would normally be on for a split second, but there's no sign of that now either.

I'm at work now but will release fuel filler cap later tonight and report back.

          Thanks.

Fix this first before messing around to much, its probably your problem.

Thanks Tony, I agree that the sudden disappearance of the glow plug light and the lack of click from the relay couldn't just be coincidence.......or could it?

Does anyone have the part number handy for the glow plug relay please?

Fuel filler cap removed as suggested. No noticeable vacuum in tank and truck remains a non starter so further investigation may have to wait until weekend now. Hopefully a friend will loan me the glow plug relay from his truck to try even though I can't really figure out how it could possibly be related.........worth a try though I suppose.

Check the fuses for the glow plugs. Give the batteries a good charge.

                    Sussed it......duff ECU.

I haven't had chance to open the thing up yet but will probably be changing the capacitors as mentioned here when I have a little free time.

I washed my surf once and it cost me £180 to get the ecu fixed.... had nothing to do with the washing..... just blown 5v regulator.
Turn key no engine light or glow light, turns over but don't start, buggered ecu. To quote my old post...

"Well the good doctor phoned this morning and the patient is going under the knife this afternoon.
The 5v rail was shot so no power to send and recieve signals from any of the sensors or drive the brain.
He cannot believe that washing and flooding the wiring could cause this and thinks that her age caused fragility
and the shock of being loved and washed overcame her......."

Then he raped me for £180 for what probly cost £5..........

Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

I could be wrong here, but the laboured starting problem you describe doesn't sound like an ECU problem to me.....more likely to be bad glow plugs or similar I'd have thought.

My own problem was that the truck wasn't even attempting to start as if there wasn't any fuel. She'd turn over quite happily until the batteries eventually died, but didn't show the faintest glimmer of starting.

As for the capacitors, I haven't had chance to look for them yet. Will no doubt be sourcing through work eventually so will post here when/if I do. If/when I do find them, it may well be possible for me to place a multiple order for anyone here wishing to change theirs.
