  • check engine light

hi guys was off to work this morning cruising down the motor way when all of a sudden out of the blue the check engine light came on and i lost acceleration, when i pulled onto the hard shoulder and came to a stop it felt like a manual car would when its about to stall. I switched off the ignition and then tried to restart it and that was it game over. once I got towed to a near by car park I looked under the bonnet and the fuel primer button took a fair few pumps to go hard (its always been hard in till now). tried to start again and still no joy. Its now been towed t a local garage. any one experienced this before ? any ides ? Im assuming its fuel related as its always hard to get started but once started it starts all day no problem, well in till now any way.

Get the fault code first, its the best place to start, seeing as thats what the ECU is grumbling about.

Just bridge TE1 and E1 in the diag box under the bonnet, and check the codes with the list in the Tech Forum.

just been told from garage it probably needs new engine as the oil and coolant were empty and ive cooked it , this and the washing machine in the same week. they said probably not worth getting a new engine just sell it what do you guys think ?, obviously an oil and coolant leak somewhere to.

I assume spomeone's put oil and coolant in it and tried it before just writing it off?

Why not worth it? Its a £2k plus truck, is worthless with a knackered motor, I'm sure you can get used motor inc fitting for under £1k, (its max I would want to charge if I had a motor to supply and fit, which I don't before you ask, last one here is spoken for.. ) its only worth £2-300 (IMHO) at mo, you'll be throwing a lot of money away just letting it go.

When did you last check coolant and oil? Somehow losing all of both at same time sounds a bit sus.

To be fair the oil was just very low not empty and I hadn't checked for a month or so as I'm not using it much, the coolant gets done all the time as it goes down all the time. I got it started 5minits ago to drive it home from garage with the check engine light on running really really badly with toped up oil and water and now am awaiting the AA again lol, tried going up a hill and she died now I can't start the dam thing even with easy start. This will be expensive I can feel it lol.

I did fill both before driving it home, I've noticed since the breakdown the fuel primer pump thing now can be pumped and has to be pumped to keep it running or it cuts out

well ive done the unthinkable, after telling the misses a million times in the past to make sure she puts the right fuel in. yes i filled the 3l diesel with unleaded 40l of it. maybe it wont need a new engine after all lol. any body want some petrol slightly cut with diesel in southampton.
