  • Head skimmed - does this look ok ?

Just had the head off my 'good' 3.0 engine skimmed before fitting to my 'busted head' engined project truck.

The normal place they crack is fine (between the valves)

However it looks like on cylinders 1, 2 and 3 there is a very small crack between the valve area and the precombustion inserts.

Is this something to worry about or quite normal ? I know its quite normal to see the cracks on the precombustion bits so am not worried about them.

    Thanks,
    Rob.

I've had proper cracks there, but normally of only on heads with big crack in the normal places as well, never just there.

Personally I wouldn't use it, they do look like cracks from the pics.

    Sorry...

Unless you can weld it and skim it yourself, I wouldn't bother paying money to repair it, best put the money towards a new one.

That looks cracked internally and going out to me, and only noticed on the outside after skimming a little off the face, good odds it'll just carry on splitting as soon as it heats up again.

Also its been skimmed once already now, I'd worry about skimming it again after welding it.

( only in my opinion obviously...)

I wouldn't use it either due to all the 'cracks' being in the same place. Obviously something to do with the casting.

Looks like it now has a new job as a door stop . No longer any use as a cylinder head unless you want problems in my opinion .

I agree. Thats what the head looked like on the old free leeter. It didnt have an obvious crack, but some minor spots just like yours. stevo replaced it, and after looking at it, he remarked how that would proabaly be enough to cause a problem, if it went further back into the casting.
Sorry chap, seems its time to get saving.
