  • not firing from cold

hello again, I am really struggling to get my surf started after being left off for a while (cold start), dont no much about cars to be honest so any help will be appreciated, I fitted new glow plugs last week made no difference and it is not the parked on a hill problem. It is turning over fine and seems to have a lot of life in it so can assume its safe to rule out batteries. I have a new fuel filter ready to fit (not 100% sure how) but dont think that is the problem as when you pump the priming button its already pretty stiff. could it be the heater relay ?, the light on the dash goes out instantly but you dont hear the click for at least 30secs. i do have a slight fuel and oil leak but have not been able to locate them. i had do give it a little squirt of easy start the other morning and it still struggled to get going. begining to worry i mite be damageing the starter motor by turning it over so many times with no fire. any help welcomed guys cheers.

The glow plug relay normally clicks off about 10 seconds after the light goes out.If you have a fuel leak then its probably due to that.
Does the primer on top of the fuel filter go hard after pumping it a few seconds. If it don't then this could be the problem also.

yeah it goes hard after a few secs so doubt its that, why would the fuel leak cause it not to fire up ? its not a major leak just small patch under it after left over night. any idea where it could be likely to be leaking mate.

at least the primer is ok so thats that counted out.
If you have a fuel leak then once the truck is running the fuel will flow easy.Once switched off the leak will cause air to be sucked back into the system.
Check the fuel lins from the filter to the pump and then the 4 injector pipes from the pump to the head.
Have a good look around the pump itself for any leaks.
One other thing does the filler cap hiss when you take it off.If so then the breather may be blocked and rather than fiddling under the truck to replace the breather on the tank you can get away with drilling a tiny hole through the filler cap

cant say i have noticed any hissing from the filler cap/ tank. I will have to investigate this fuel leak further. although once its been running i can start it straight away again within a couple of hours with no hassle.

it does sound as if its sucking air back in then.check and make sure the filter is done up tight and that the fuel lines are clamped up tight also

will go and have a fiddle now, any idea why the light would go out on the dash instantly and take ages to click ?

The glow plug light is meant to go out straight away and then the relay normally clicks after about 10 seconds. If its taking half a min to click off then the relay may well be knackered aswell

what would that part be called then mate ? fuel heater relay ?, i cant see where the leak is coming from, i think i will have to just book it in the garage next weekend so they can get it up on the lift.

the glow plug relay is situated on the inner n/s wing

Just been through all this with my truck. the primer pump failed by letting air in through the diaphram. It failed over a year just getting worse. the longer between starts the harder it was to start. Tried different things but a new filter head solved it. Just a thought!
