  • "Chatter" on tickover

Just wondering if anyone has come across this and could offer any pointers?
On tickover or when releasing the accelerator, essentially any time the engine/box isn't under pressure, I'm getting what can best be described as chatter in the cab. It sounds like it is coming from the tunnel.

    Any ideas welcome.

    Clatter

I no expert on these but it could be a Dmf (dual mass fly wheel). The springs on these fall apart. If you search for dmf on this forum, you'll get alot more info.

I will read up on that. Does that apply to autos though?

Ive just noticed that it creaks like an oul door when I'm reversing. Don't think it's related to above. No noise on going forward.

DMF is only on manual surfs.

Check its not something loose on the exhaust, like a broken heat shield, and particually the clamp that holds it to the bracket on the side of the gearbox bellhousing.

The noise going backwards is probably a Universal Joint on the rear prop.

Thanks. It's like a rattlesnake. Looks like my Saturday is sorted.

As a matter of interest, are you back in business?

I had a loud rattle from under the dash on idle that was worse when cold, found it was the heater control cable coming through the bulkhead that was touching down. I just bent the mounting bracket and that fixed it.
Also while I was fitting a new radio I cable tied any loose wires etc under the dashboard then stuck some silicon sealer on anything that moved! I did this on my old Alfa Romeo 155.
I went up and down the rev range listening for any vibrations or rattles, it took about an hour but was well worth it as I now have an much quieter truck.
              Hope this helps.

Cheers Dobbs. As my proper work day went to hell, I got home at lunchtime. All filters, alternator and belts (how knackered can a belt get??) changed. Original fuel filter I believe. Scary

I've also greased the UJ's. Found a broken clip on the heat shield. Must get jubilee clip! Still chattering but that just may be how it is. Not driven or spent time with Surfs before.

Some oil leaks and a small piece missing on the bottom of the tranny where it joins the engine.

Tony, Ive tried calling the no on your site, albeit not this week, no joy. Wouldn't mind paying for it to be looked over by someone who knows what they are doing.
