What actually controls the gear box changing gear (apart from the kickdown)?

Does the gearbox sense loads and speed and change gear to compensate or is it totally controlled by the ECU?

The chaps that re-built my 'box said that the electronics only control overdrive and lockup; the rest is hydraulic. So a bit of both.

Assuming you mean a Surf gearbox.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

      Thanks mate, thats great.
What do you mean by lockup, I thought that was a mechanical thing to do with the front and rear wheels when driven in 4wheel drive on dry tarmac, locking up.

Also do you know what the little red button does just forward of the gear stick, mine has Japanese writing so I dont understand it.

Since December 2007 when you joined, I do believe the "RED BUTTON" subject has been covered a few times...

But in case you missed it, it controls the fuel advance system trim, or FAST for short.

Press it once at tickover, and once again at the speed you generally drive at. It alters the fueling to suit your rev range / speed range.

            HTH.

Hi John, I`m sorry to report but the function of the little red button is nothing particularly glamorous at all, it`s a fail safe which allows you to release the gear stick in the event of an electrical failure, as the gear selector is locked by an electrical solenoid should you have an electrical failure you would be stuck with an immobile truck in park, if you hold down the button you can select neutral so you can be towed if needs be.

Auto boxes, so far as the masses are concerned, are filled with elves and wizards and magic! It`s a whole specialist area of the motor trade on it`s own and takes years of training to understand how they work, for the vast majority if they do not work correctly it`s a case of have it rebuilt by a specialist or replace it!

Lock up is essentially 1:1 drive, the torque converter is locked and the gearbox rotates at the same speed as the engine, in real terms: top gear, which would be forth on a surf. Over drive is essentially when the gearbox is "overdriving" it`s input, i.e. the output from the gearbox is higher than the input, by it`s design overdrive reduces the amount of torque available to the driving wheels so you tend to find it only fitted to larger engined vehicles and only working under cruising conditions when you do not need the torque to maintain a speed.

              Hope this helps.

              John

That was a most informative reply I hope I never have to use the knowledge.
