  • A couple of autobox Q's .

My 3.0 came with a knackered box. No drive at all. Did the error codes, removed the plug on the box and tried it manually. (yes I searched the forum for a couple of nights- have read almost every thread on 'gearbox' )

When I drained the box the atf was thin and jet black.

I have removed the old box and have a replacement ready to fit.

    My questions are:

Will the torque convertor off the old knackered box be ok to use?

If no are the 3.0 TQ's the same as the 2.4's ?

If you tilt the gearbox up without the TQ fitted so the bellhousing faces the ground is it normal for atf to weep out around the input shaft or does a seal need replacing?

    Thanks,
    Rob.

I recently reused a torque convertor when changing a knackered gearbox, new box failed within a month, I wouldn't bother again. You can't get any crap out of it.

Yeah it will leak with no converter fitted.

Don't know about converters, have recently scrapped all my old ones. Gearboxes are the same apart from bellhousing and shifter elec socket shape

      Thanks Tony,

I checked the toyodiy site (or whatever it's called ) and it has two different part numbers for the 2.4 and the 3.0.

      I'll find me a TQ off a good'n.

      Rob.

Well it's lucky I didn't fit the old 3.0 converter onto the new box.

I've cut open the old 3.0 TQ and a 2.4 TQ to compare the internals. They look and measure the same as far as I can tell, although the numbers on the bits do differ.

                    Here's the 2.4 TQ:

My old 3.0 TQ was very broken. The needle bearings were missing in one half and the vanes were broken off and bent. The whole vane had sheared from the case aswell.

3.0 versus 2.4 bits. All the teeth on the gears match in size / pattern etc.
