  • Rear brake advice

Our new baby has just been into garage for first service since we got her. Everything fine apart from a couple of wee repairs. The handbrake wire in rear brake drum has almost broken so going to replace that along with shoes. Question is that what milners is selling is different to what is on car. Apparently this is because Toyota has changed this part due to the wire always breaking. Our mechanic is concerned that the part from milners is shorter than the wire already in use and is worried this won't work properly. I have ordered the part anyway but does anyone have any advice as to this new part working ok to reassure mechanic.

Just an update to say my car is a 3.0TD SSRG 3rd Gen 1996.

RT says its a Toyota part for the 2nd Gen so I'd assume its fine.

It's different on the 3rd gen the cable is one piece from bellcrank to handbrake arm

The bit I am talking about is definitely separate from the handbrake cable. It is the piece that fits inside the brake drum. The part I am talking about is the last item on Brakes on milners site under hilux surf import engine KZN185.

Yep I know the part, I've had the drums off mine more times than i want to think about, and on my 3rd gen the cable goes from the other side of the bellcrank thats inside the drum to the handbrake arm that is connected to the shoe

So do I need the part that I ordered or should I have ordered the whole brake cable. My mechanic said there was definately a separate piece of wire about 9cm long and that is the bit that is broken. Roughtrax told my OH that this piece of wire has now been replaced by the piece mentioned above which I have ordered from milners although my mechanic thinks this piece is smaller and won't fit.

this is the bit, its very different from the 2nd Gen drums.

The link RT sells is the right shapeish to replace the cable, as long as its long enough.

Not sure why is listed as a KZN130 part, as the cable goes through the backplate directly to lever on the shoe on 2nd drums.

Cheers Tony i was struggling to explain it clearly, the piece in question is about 7" long maybe a little longer but it's definitely one piece from the bell crank to the actuating arm HTH

Thanks TonyN. It is the length that my
Mechanic thinks will be the problem. The long piece you have circled in red is what I am looking for. Where can I get this from if Milners or Rt dont have it.

possibly a toyota part or ask one of the breakers on here to see if they have a spare one

Probably Toyota dealer, but see what Milners send, Roughtrax list it as a replacment for the cable, and they normally know what they are about.

RT list it as a Toyota part for the 3rd gens at 7cm long.

They list it for both 2nd and 3rd but that's obviously wrong. It's a 3rd generation brake part.

I thought that, but on pickup rear drums there is a short wire bit going up vertically on the trailing shoe to the pivot, it looks like it could be that to.

                              Brake cable

                              Hi All

I have tried to replace mine but it will not fit .
RT have not fitted any in there work shop so can not give advice.

I wonder if the brake levers are updated as well.
