  • I changed the water pump and thermostat today

    2nd gen 3.0

    Pretty easy job really.

    Remove both batteries for access.
Undo the aircon top hardpipe from rad
Take off auto box hoses at rad and blank off with 2 x 10mm bolts so you don't lose ATF
Take off rad bottom hose, then top hose at rad.
    Take off the shroud.
    Remove rad
    Remove aircon belt
    Remove fan (4 bolts)
Take off pulley and twin alternator belts
Take aircon off (4 bolts) don't damage hose unions, keep it to one side with cable ties.
Loosen alternator adjuster and take out main mounting bolt to drop alt.
Under truck follow the water outlet on engine (cast pipe) and take out the wee 10mm bolt. At top of housing remove the 2 x 10mm bolts,(good time to flush system, take off the heater hose at the valve on bulkhead) put new stat in, refit heater hose.
Undo the 5 bolts and 1 nut holding waterpump, replace gasket and re-fit new pump.

Stick it all back together, fill with coolant, job done.

Wee pic of stat location with aircon and alternator moved out of the way.

Wee tip, I found putting the alternator belts back on really easy if I lifted them on from the bottom of the alternator pulley rather than over the top.

I must have had a dodgy stat, the pump seemed fine.
temps have dropped from 98 under load to 94 and normal temp has dropped at least 8.

Nice to hear it went well mate, going to attempt my cam belt next weekend & hopefully do a full write up with pics, either that or it could be a case of finding a new engine in the "parts wanted" section cos I've friged up.

Cambelt is really easy on 3.0 2nd gen.

Use a good sized cable tie to hold the belt when your fitting the idler and cut the tie before you pull the pin on the tensioner.

Turn engine over by hand a at least 4 times and re-check the timing marks.

Never tackled a 3rd gen though.

If it's the same as 2nd gen then yes it is.

Any play at all in the tensioner piston you should replace it.
It comes with a hold-back pin fitted but if you are re-using your old one then you will need a vice to compress it and a 4mm allen key or similar to hold the piston back so it can be refitted.

Remember thermostat jiggle pin within 30° of 12 O Clock.

                From Toyota 1KZ TE manual.

By pure chance that's exactly what I did.

Within 30°? If I'd have been that lax, my foreman would have kicked my arse from here to next Tuesday.

You don't need to worry about faffing with cambelts anymore

Thats correct, a nice timing chain is so much less hassle.

                            Does that mean 12 o'clock is better or 30 deg or thereabouts ? 10 past 12 ??

Think... what's the hole there for...?

If you can figure that out you'll know where it goes.
