My air con has suddenly stopped working. The light comes on and the compressor is running but the temperature is ambient. Does the gas just suddenly run out? I was under the impression it got gradually less effective; is this not the case?

do you mean that one day it was 100% working and the next day it had died?. most a/c systems will not make the compressor come on[the loud click] when you turn it on if there is no gas as a pressure sensor would "tell" the a/c ecu that ther is not enough pressure and therefore not allow the pump to run dry, dont waste your money on one of those halfords type canister fills, get it checked by a garage that can deal with a/c, for a small fee they should tell you how much-if any gas that you have and then you can procede from there.
You are correct-any a/c system loses about 10% a year from new so at some point a re gas is needed.hope that helps, kirk.

Can't help with your problem, but just to add mines the same. Plenty of gas, and compresser works. get a spinny up "whine" from under the glovebox area when I press the ac button, but still no cold air. Have a look at the filter/drier thing thats under the bonnet. Theres a wee glass bullseye thing on it. You should be able to see a flow of liquid across it. Possibly its blocked. Have a feel of the pipes going to and from the evaporator. The biggish pipes which go through the bulkhead. The LP side should be cold.Сви можемо

Further to my original post, after turning the car off for 30 minutes or so, the air went cold again. I'm thinking it may be a pressure issue, so a re-gas is in order.
