if its been off for a year has the hole gone all dry and rusty -

sounds like its not free to move around to line up to the splines - try a good squirt of wd-40

thanks for the help got it sorted was a fiddley job but got it on wd40 lots of wiggleing and pressure!!! about 3hr over 3 days!"!!!!!!!!!!!
