  • Oil cooler

    Hi
last week i again tried to pull a trailer with my KZN 185.
Again the temperature rose to just below the red when i pulled in and let it cool down.
take the trailer off trouble free motoring ..... trailer on getting hot.
i have read the threads on here about using a seperate oil cooler for the auto box and remove the one from the bottom of the rad and remove the restriction into the bottom hose.
Has anyone done this mod.....Did it work.
i have had a price of a kit at 160.00 but have seen coolers for as little as 35 pounds.
    Not sure what to do?
can you let me know you thoughts?
    thanks for the help
    steve

Just a though but have you checked that the trailer is working properly. Whether loaded or empty your Surf should be able to pull a trailer without any problems, except maybe when driving up a long hill. Does the car seem to pull OK with the trailer attached or does it labour? If so, could be the trailer brakes are dragging or maybe it's not tracking straight behind the car, making the drive train work harder than it should.

Certainly check the obvious problems before forking out for an oil cooler, especially as it's not that hot at the moment, so the engine really shouldn't overheat unless you're low on coolant or have a cracked head or head gasket.

Good point, i tow a 1500kg caravan & it never over heats, gets warmer up hills but never goes to red.
I will be fitting a cooler shortly as im going to be doing alot more towing this year so i think one is in order.

check the radiator - give the cooling system a good flush out. the radiator might be partially blocked.

i had a 4.0l cherokee that did exactly the same when towing a 1 ton trailer - it got to the stage i was having to leave the heater on full blast in summer to keep the engine temp. normal.

flushed the system and it helped but had to get the rad re-built - it was full of crap.

I know a guy who tried everything to stop his 3rd Gen overheating under heavy load. Even a new rad, then he took two stupidly large spot lights off the bull bar and its been fine ever since.

Always worth fitting a AFT cooler though, even a small one if doing lots of towing.

              oil cooler

              Hi
thanks for the input so far.
It does only get warm when towing uphill on a long run. have used two different trailers a 12 by 6 flat bed and a 12 by 6 cattle trailer and both were the same. have flushed the rad etc and initially found a blocked overflow pipe from the rad to expansion bottle....... thought this was the fix but still the same.
can presume a oil cooler would be a good idea and change the at fluid.
              thanks

                s

I had exactly the same thing with mine last year - turned out that mine got so bad that it eventually cracked the head.

I now have a nice new head but perhaps more importantly I fitted an in line ATF cooler (kept the one in the main rad as well) and also re-filled the viscious fan so it now firms up when the truck gets warm (it didn't before so wasn't pulling air through), also changed the rad cap as they can get tired as well.

Now tows the caravan, up hill & down dals and teh temp gauge only slightly moves when under heavy load for extended periods, even down the M% outside bristol and I don't lose coolant

                hope this helps

Mine was the same so I fitted a separate trans cooler but made sure it was inline and used the old cooler as well. I also changed the oil in the fan and fitted a 71c thermostat from a Prado, keeps the temps right down. Also, make sure the radiator is flushed and free flowing. When all is done it should be good. The thermostat makes a real difference. Toyota part number for that is 90916-03121

has anyone fitted one and any problems where it is fitted etc.
was thinking locating it low down below the bomper vents?

I fitted mine behind the bumper and below the main radiator. On my front bumper there were some 'blanked off' sections painted matt black to look like air inlets. I cut out a couple of these and lined the oil cooler up with them for airflow.
There were some convenient holes in the metalwork behind the bumper to attach the cooler to.

                          s

fitted mine (13 row mocal cooler) in front of the main rad behind the grill on the opposite side to the air con rad.

had it lower down before before but felt it didn't get enough air flow as the bumper was in the way.

Dead easy to fit, hardest part is getting the bash plates off to get at the built in rad pipes
