Viscous Fan

I have a 2nd gen which runs up to normal operating temp. Am I correct to assume that once hot, the fan coupling should be stiff enough to stop the fan almost immediately when the ignition is turned off.


Can I service a 2nd gen fan and if so, what oil and how many ml does it take to refill.

When the engine is at operating temperature, the fan is 'locked'
It should 'free-wheel' when cold.

So to answer your assumption, yes.

the official Toyota refills have 6000 on them, so I've always bought that spec in bulk from model shops.

stiffer wouldn't hurt at all, if that's what higher numbers mean.

Thanks Tony, I have found 7000 so may go for that if the yota stuff is 6000

Carried out this fan service today, very quick and straight forward.
Having the fan working at it's best can only be a good thing and for only £4 of oil. I have enough oil to do the Jimny and the 3rd gen so they will be next.
