Help, My Hilux is acting strange..I think shes poorly! :(

Hi guys, i have a mystery here, i have a 1996 3L TD special edition surf, it is serviced every year and has been for well since i have had it for 5 years now, i have just had a new water pump well about 2 months ago. Anyway one realy cold morning about 2 weeks ago when we had that severe cold weather i started my truck as normal, but noticed it started with the ignition key position in number 1? Instead of number 2! THEN the engine did not sound right it was clattering and out of syn it just sounded real bad but allso as i was in park the gears was grinding? It sounded like the gearbox, then i looked under the hood and i could hear a wizzing noise like a belt thats going round with too much effort an that was coming from the top end where it says Turbo!....BUT when i put it in to neutral postition it allso does the same thing, but as soon as i put it into Drive it sounds fine as smooth as it should and drives fine (touch wood)

I'm about to let my local garage have a look tommorow when hes open, just though i would ask anyone if they have a clue as to what the garage man is likely to say to me...at the moment i feel like this.....

No...erm...but it started when we had the real cold cold -7+ temps at night, I just thought parts of the engine or something had frozen and i got off likely, as the problem never happend again? and covered my truck up from then on, until recently it happened again....But no it has not been in any water or off roaded or anything...thanks for the reply though!

you might be experiencing diesel knock mate, ive just had an injector go down on me and its giveing the same syptoms as yours except gearbox?????? have a look at your fuels lines and trace them upto the injectors my number two injector was wet with diesel and was sucking air which makes it sound as though the truck is going to fall apart. stick it in drive and give it some gas it drives fine on mine aswell but still sounds like a tractor lol. its worth a check. if it is an injector id ask on the forum if anyones got any it would be cheaper than ebay, or if its not urgent take em out and get them refurbished by your local diesel fitter. in hull where ill get mine charge £27 per injector if you need to replace nozzle if nozzle is ok they charge around £18 per injector, just arough estimate for ya if it does turn out to be injectors.

thanks guys for your replys...well today going to the GYM it was doing again in park and neutral but smooth as anything in drive, along with the gear grinding noise(in park and Neutral) as well...then after 3 hour session in the gym got in the truck and its now fine in park fine in neutral and sounds beutifull when i rev it? then as normal went into drive and drove fine with the turbo kicking in when it should weird!...but i bet your bottom dollar it will return tommorow?....this fault is intimitant!

Oh what i also found out was when putting the stick in park this morning along with all the above pronlems it switched my Stereo off???? Then when in Drive as normal stereo came back on?.Could it juast be a electrical fault but then again that would not cause the gear box to sound like its grinding?

Sounds to me like an earth problem. Check all big electrical connections,batteries,block earths etc.
