  • Can anyone tell me what the difference is between

a Hilux Surf and a 4Runner. I have a 1994 3.0lt Turbo Diesel that was advertised as a Surf/4Runner when I bought it but is badged "Hilux Surf"?

      Thanks Marky,
The bumper is chrome coloured but I'm not sure that it is actually chrome. As far as the suspension goes there is a switch for Hard and Normal next to the Idle Up switch.

UK 4Runners were only sold between 93-95, wide or normal body. No chrome, no adjustable suspension. 3.0lt TD or V6 petrol only. Underslung spare. and loads of little stuff like no cupholder, no front interier light, no aircon (was an expensive option).

Easiest way to spot a UK 4Runner is it will have a retangular number plate and flush fog light in the tailgate and no chrome trim, also imports don't have dash light dimmer and adjustable headlights.

Hilux Surf is Japan only name, 4Runner around most of the world.

          re: Surf/4Runner

          Thanks guys for the info.

From it I believe I have an imported ( sorry!!! forgot to mention that!) Surf as the bumper is definitely not chrome (grey) and the spare is on a carrier across the back. I did speak to Toyota today and they reckoned, from the VIN details it thought(?) it was a Surf SSR-X.

While I'm on, by the way, can I pick some brains on the following:
I invested in one of these translated owners handbooks and, while there is a lot of useful info in it, it doesn't give the usual forecourt data like a british car so, can anyone tell me what the fuel tank and oil capacities are and what the normal tyre pressures should be?

I don't know whether this is right forum but I was reading sometime ago a thread on insurance and thought the following might be of interest. When I tried to switch my insurance with the RAC to this car they wouldn't because it was an import. I ended up online at Tescos and, although in the smallprint there was something about imports there was nowhere to note it as such. I phoned them and was told that if I had put in the reg no (I had) then they would know it was imported.

          Result £164 with full ncb!

The first surf that i was going to buy had a 4RUNNER sticker up the sides even though it was a SURF ask to see the import & auction papers from japan at the end of the day its an import ??? The 4runner is a good vehicle the SURF had more options available

Fuel tank capacity varies - but my 94 3.0TD is 65 litres
Oil tank capacity depends on the engine you have - I would guess its the 1KZ-TE engine same as mine, in which case oil capacity is 6.4l (or 7.0l with new oil filter
Tyre pressure is a personal preference - and depends on the tyres size you run - for 265/70/R15 or 31x10.50x15, most people on here seem to run between 29 and 33 psi for normal road driving.

Under FAQ on the general forum there is a long thread on Insurance etc...
Oh - and where are the pics?????????? We want to admire the new addition to the surf family!!!

                re:surf/4Runner

                Thanks for the info Linda.

I will get around to it as soon as I can but at the moment I'm so busy driving it, it hasn't stood still long enough to be photographed!

What is it about these beasts? I've liked a lot of my previous cars but this is special.

This is SOME forum! Who needs technical manuals or TV comedy(?) shows when this is here?

After the last post I remembered I had some pics sent by the guy I bought it off. Hopefully they should be attached to this.

                        Thanks Mandy,

Unfortunately somebody has been overzealous with the polishing and consequent rubbing so the plate is unreadable. Must have been one of these park it outside and polish it Sundays types!

I've just noticed that the pics I attached to the reply to Linda don't appear to be there, so I'll try again.

Thats one confusing car!! Nice though!!

No silly little parking mirror and the grey bumper say 4-runner, but the crome wing mirrors and rear mounted spare say surf...

What does the log book say? If it was imported it shd be obvious from that.

Another way to check is to get a car shop to search on the reg for the vin number - they can only do it for UK built cars and not imports.

Reminds me a bit of one we saw in B&Q a while back - said Toyota Hilux 4-Runner on the back - but was really hard to tell what it actually was!!
