  • Funny noise - Please listen

Hi all. I've been getting a real funny noise from my Gen2 (KZN130) for the last week.

It went in for an MOT on Friday and sailed through

But I asked the garage to check out the noise also, they didn't really give this any effort but took the front near side wheel off, as this seems to be where it's coming from, Pads and disks all seem fine.

The truck feels like there's some resistance in the transmission, this started back in Feb when I was last using it in 4WD in the snow. But it seemed to clear up and I've used it all year, even been to Cornwall and back in it.

The main grinding noise I've got now only started last week, in the last of the snow. Again I was in 4WD but when it first started but it's been doing it ever since in 2WD.

There's not a lot of consistency to when it does it either, generally clears up when doing 50+ and mostly stops when braking but it tends to do it more turning left!

Any suggestions as to what this could be would be great. I want to get it sorted, love my surf! but I don't want to pay a garage hours of labour just to suss it So please help me point them in the right direction.

If you need any other info, just ask.

    Hiya Dan

Did they check the wheel Bearings at the garage or the Bronze bushes ?

Sounds to me like the bearing is binding, so possibly on the way out.

      Hi Andy

Thanks for the info, the garage said the bearing was ok not sure about the bronze bushes though.

Although to be fair, the garage spent all of 2 mins looking at it so I don't entirely trust anything they said.

If it is the bearing, do you think it would have temporaly improved if the wheel was taken off and put back on again, cos it did

Needless to say I won't be using the garage again which is a shame as they are right next door to where I work

Got my truck in with another garage today but annoyingly it stopped making the noise just before I pulled in and they haven't been able to hear it!

Is there anyway to know if the bearings have gone without opening the diff up?

If truck is being driven in two wheel drive the front diff is not being used, so doubt this is where your issue is.

I think that you may have got some water/road grit contamination in the hub bearings, from running in the snow and ice.

I would suggest stripping these out, and getting them checked for wear and tear, and then either replaced or repacked with new grease, after cleaning, dependant upon condition.
