  • Hose hanging off

Just had a service done and have had issues since with a strange engine noise and white-ish smoke from the exhaust at start up.

Looked under the bonnet and hey presto there appears to be a hose hanging loose from its spout at the back of the engine (see photo - the bulk head is to the left).

I'm assuming it shouldn't be like this!

What is it and why might it be hanging off?

I'm trying to find out what it is, why it's come off and if the car should be driven while its off. For instance, is it something that might have been taken off during the service and forgotten or has it just blown off?

I would never have known without your input that it needed to go back on. Thanks!

I've obviously tried to put it back on, but it's very stiff to manoeuvre and I can't get it on properly as I have arthritic hands. Going to have to call somewhere tomorrow for some assistance. Which means driving the car without it being on properly.

I'm not 100% sure what it is and it's too dark and wet to go look at mine. It may have been disturbed during the service. It doesn't look like it's blown off.

        No worries, happy to help.

You've been driving it up 'til now, so a short journey to have it fixed will be ok.

It's part of the PCV system.

No, it's part of the PCV system. And yes it will just push back on but the lad has arthritis so perhaps tricky to manage.

                Doesn't a 'Positive Crankcase Ventilation' system = A breather pipe ?

Any news on your 3.0 Kerrsurf ? - what happened about the brakes ? (I had a similar prob)

Thanks. Is it doing any harm either not being on at all (as before) or not on properly (as now)?

Prety much the same thing except the PCV system that I remember had a one way valve. No valve on these so it's just a breather.

It can make a bit of a mess if oil sprays out and will suck in dirty air.

Gets full of gunge too, another bit I cleaned out properly while doing the head. Had a similar thing on an old cavalier, took off the rocker cover for that and cleaned out a blocked filter in there, performance improved significantly so not just a breather. H

Not tackled the brakes yet because of running problems, but I got a vacuum bleeder which will hopefully resolve it.

Yup, you could call it a breather but the proper term is PCV and this is whats referred to in the Toyota workshop manuals.
There is a fair sized filter located under the rocker cover that this pipe leads to and it does get very gunged up.

Pedant, stop argueing in front of the newbies!

Hard to see how it'd make it run badly, normally just makes a mess.

Its normally hardened by heat and a bugger to bend to get back on. But won't do any harm.

hey, did that 3.0 you guys were having trouble over ever get sorted? I think I missed it while in Cornwall...
