well where to start! I must say this is the first thread I have put onto the site. Gotta say i do more reading and learning lol

Well i do havew a major problem in that while going round a roundabout the smurf decided to stop and i cruised to a dead stand still. I did'nt try restarting but looked under the hood. O my god a large crack in the cam belt cover and a toothed cog sticking thru it. There is also a pool of oil. Now the cam belt was changed about 5 months ago. I have'nt had a chance to take the cover off yet but does anyone have any ideas? and thanks in advance for any assisstance

ps the smurf is an autoand just b4 the stop was not dropping revs wen applyin the brake

Under the cover is the cam belt which connects the cam shaft to the crank shaft.
Basically, the belt ensures that the valves open and close at the correct time relevant to the position of the pistons.
A belt can snap at anytime and I've spoken to taxi drivers who have had belts snap under 1000 miles after a replacement had been installed.
If a belt snaps what usually happens is a few bent valves or rods, but can be worse.
Not sure why you can see cogs protruding through the cover, but rest assured it will require a professional diagnosis and a bit of cash to sort out.
Best of luck and keep us posted

The pulley must have come away from the camshaft or the camshaft is broken, the belt may still be complete but if the belt has not been fitted properly then too much stress can be put on the end of the cam and lead to cracking.

The oil will be from the front cam seal, probably dislodged if the cam has broken near the front with the pulley still attached.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,
but it sounds like the cam pulley has come
loose, and been pulled forward, into the belt
cover, it may not be a cheap repair, but have
someone take a look, just to make sure.

          Hope I'm wrong mate.

          Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

For the pulley to come off it needs the bolt to loosen and the woodruff key to come away from shaft, my money is on broken cam.

Just undo the rocker cover to see if the cam broke, if its OK then its got to be the cam belt pulley come adrift, the bolt holding this is seriously tight, also a half moon woodruff key to lock it in place, whoever did the cam belt would have some explaining to do if it was my truck. Was the tensioner and idler replaced at the time of belt change?
the tensioner should be checked for play, basically if you can move it with your finger it's had it.
Idler should have zero play and be quiet.
If the bolts have sheared off they have probably not been tightened to correct torque setting.

What was the 'toothed cog' sticking through the belt cover?

Well here's the second update and the news is very bleak. The cam tensioner has sneered off but i think this is due to the cam snapping in half. Mind u it was a good break right in the middle of the shaft. I think it must b wear as if any xtra pressure was being placed on it from the belt etc it wudda snapped at the front! I am really struggling to get the lower pully off tho (think it's called the No 2 cam pully, where the 3 belts all go round) I hoiping it is right hand thread but it is very tight but i guess there's a special tool to get it off

I will try and get sum pics b4 my hands are too dirty and covered in oil

Here's what I think happened. Your tensioner seized and snapped the bolt, or the bolt simply sheared because it was weakened by too much tension or whatever. This would cause the timing to be way out, which in turn caused the pistons to hit the valves which is what broke the cam.

If this is the case then you may have other damage besides what is obvious so far. These could be damaged pistons, bent con rods etc. Don't want to be the bearer of more bad news, but you could be up for a replacement engine.
