nope, been working all week and doing other stuff, waiting to hear if I can get someone out with a scanner.
I'll post when it's finally running.

Ok heres where I'm up to.

        The truck is running but....

Today I fed fuel directly into pump and it ran fine, it even idled properly.
So I changed the primer on fuel filter housing, put more diesel in it and it ran fine, then stopped.
Easy to start with no throttle, idled on idle-up revs and on low idle. Sat for a good 5 mins on idle then died.

I think the fuel pickup in the tank may be the problem, whats the best method to get at this and make sure all the pipes and other items are clean and not perished? Will I have to drop the tank?

It starts off the key with no throttle and will happily idle but then for no clear reason it will just stop.

I still have the rev counter blipping, the truck on normal idle revs and the needle is low, give the throttle a poke and the needle goes to where it should be, hold the revs at 2000 and the needle wavers a bit.

Also the fuel level gauge stopped working today for some reason, I wasn't poking around the tank at all.

When I had fun & games with mine not so long ago, I used an electric pump for inflating airbeds etc to blow the fuel lines out to the tank.

Ok so tonight I filled a big jerry can and tried to run the truck for a while with direct fuel feed, no joy, it would start and idle for about 40 seconds then die.

So it seems the fuel system is not to blame.

The rev counter was very erratic when truck did run, sometime registering no revs at all as the truck was attempting to start.

Did you get someone to plug in and read the fault codes?
Also, have you swapped ECUs with Brians or someone elses?

                Yes and yes.

No joy. No fault codes, no joy with other ECU.

I went round today to have another look. My thoughts were (are) that the problem is to do with the truck's immobiliser. But I'm also leaning towards a general wiring problem.

This evening, we couldn't get the truck to fire up properly. It fired (knocked like hell) and immediately cut out. But, if we kept the ignition switch in the 'Start' position, the truck fired and stayed running (and knocking); but the revs rose uncontrollably until the switch was released, then it would cut out.

I think we've eliminated fueling and vacuum problems, so we're only left with electronics. There are no fault codes and we've tried my truck's ECU.

Anyone got any ideas where we should be looking next.

I'm totally confused now, did this trouble occur after the head change or the pump?

After the head change. Alan changed the pump to try and fix the problem, but it didn't help. At least we know it's not the pump or anything bolted to it.

Then I'm thinking the timing is 180* out.

I don't think it's that. Sometimes the truck will start and run perfectly for 10 minutes before cutting out. Sometimes, when it's running, the rev counter bounces, which is why I'm thinking either the immobiliser or the fuel cut off valve wiring (which seems to be in the rev counter circuit).

                                Ah, OK.

Immobiliser wiring will be spliced into the multiplug under the steering column shroud, the thick black wire (Starter) and thin black wire (relay) both go from the ignition switch accross to the passenger side, will be cut and the immobiliser wired in between.
Just re-join these two wires back to the multiplug.
