Directions for changing head

Hi all, on a run from Fort William to Edinburgh, we found ourselves in Stirling with the white smoke (steam) and belching coolant.

Got a new head being delivered from Stevo today, so I have this morning to get the old one off. Has anyone posted instructions on how to do the job?

there's a full section on the cylinder head remove/replace. Its a pretty straightforward job apart from the bolts these jap ba$tards put in inaccessible places, I did mine in the street and really the only hold ups were for studs I'd had to grind off with replacements from the toyota dealer having to be ordered, then again the wait for their arrival allowed me the time to save up, £34 for 8. I spent an afternoon getting some from a jap in a scrappy but wrong pitch thread so had to cough up. H

I have done a couple, got some good tips on here.

Take pics as you go.
Remove the injector hard pipes along with the intake manifold.
Don't forget to re-use your old headbolt washers (none in kit usually)
Clean everything thoroughly when it's off.
Remove the hardpipe that goes round back of head with the head and strip it on the bench.
Good time to blank off the EGR if you are planning on doing this.
Make sure the timing is spot on and turn engine by hand a few times before cranking (prime the fuel pump too)

All done Made the trip back from my dad's near Edinburgh to Northern Ireland without event, coolant stayed at a crisp 67C the whole way and, after an initial couple of minutes of puffing, the exhaust was clean as a dove's fart.

you say your coolant temp is at 67deg c, have you fitted a different stat, I got a new one but my car sits at 85 by the new temp guage which I think is correct for the model but would prefer to run it cooler if its just a stat change? H

Nope, didn't make that clear, I take the reading from a different place - the rear seat heating matrix feed. It must be a good deal cooler than the full temperature hot feed, so I'm thinking of changing where I take it, but the benefit is it always has coolant flow, even if the thermostat is closed.

ok, thought it seemed a little low, you got me worried I was cooking the new head there, I think 85-90 is normal temps for the car as it sticks at this all day long, then again it'll soon be pulling my twin axle head buster so I'm hoping the atf cooler will stop temps getting too high. H
