    Hi guys

I have searched the forum for an answer and checked my owners manual which i think is for a third gen but here we go I have a second gen 3l td with auto box on the change lever i have park, reverse,neutral,drive,2, and L what exactly is "L" for i only use high ratio 4WD in the snow and on really muddy fields have never used low ratio only on sand to give the box a run through but i just want to know what "L" is for before i mess around i guess it either Low or lock can you lock the diff on these 2nd gens

    anyway cheers

        noooo.

L on the auto box is just first gear.

        L, 2, D, O/D.

        1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.

        Its as simple as that.

It's first gear. Stops you're truck changing to a higher gear. Usefull if you are doing careful manoubering, otherwise it's generally a waste.

is there away to lock the diffs as i had a situation where the rear nearside wheel was not spinning when trying to tow someone out of deep snow i was in 4WD high ratio is there a fault with my motor or should i have been in low ratio any ideas

            cheers

You don't have locking diffs in axles, only in transfer case, so as long as its in H4L or L4L thats the most traction you're going to get.

The diffs in axle will always only supply power to one wheel, that how it goes round corners. Ironically its the wheel with least resistance, so the wheel with grip dosn't spin.

Theres nothing wrong with it, its how all diffs work.

LSD's will help get a little power the other wheel, some trucks have them from the factory, some not. Lockers will only be aftermarket fitted by owners on Surfs.

                cheers mate

just to clear this up in the tuffest conditions to get the best traction im best being in low ratio 4WD in the L/1 gear setting on the gear shift because all i usually use is the 4WD button on the transfer lever in the drive setting on the gear shift.
