over heats

looking at a 3.0 ltr thats for sale but suffers from overheating occasionally.
question time
1.do they go like a 2.4 head
2.is it likely to be just a head gasket
3.if it is just occasionally, poss needs burping
4.stay well away
not seen it in the flesh yet
BTW its a gen 2
l plate 3.0
bad bit 180k kms

You have a chance its a gasket, I've done a few 3.0's and its just been that, but you wouldn't want to bet on it.

If its cheap enough, its worth a gamble, allow £1k if you're paying someone to fit a head for you, £5-800 if you DIY it depending on where you get the head from.

if you can get it for £5-800, and the rest is in good nick, its worth thinking about.

in extreme off road are surf's any good? or am i better staying with the green oval

just trying to get your attention and the rest of you in the SMC.

do surfs eat diffs when on aggressive tyres?
and do the streering linkages let go when pushed by big tyres at extreme angles and loads.?

Only problems with the running gear in extreme conditions tends to be front half shafts i.e. joints
and only when you drive like a numpty.
I,ve been through three...

good news is you can pick them up 2nd hand for about £25 and fit them in about 1/2 an hour.

driveing like a numpty will be the norm for me, thats why i have killed the disco 10 times over, i'm now on my 3rd rear diff and 2 set of steering bars.

The only weak spot is the front CV's and them only really if you have 33" + tyres and a locker in the front.

I've never broken any drivetrain stuff on our Surfs, ever, doing lots offroading on 33" A/T's. But then again I know when to stop and back out, some people don't seem to...

on a serious note a disco running aggressive tyres eats trailing arms, diffs and steering rods and bushes like they have gone out of fashion but they are as cheap as chips to fix

I dare say you can wreak a Surf diff, shunting it backwards and fowards like a nutcase when stuck, if you try hard enough. I've not yet.

The front CV's are actually a good 'fuse' they are easy to change, not to expensive and they will let go before anything more expensive/tricky breaks.

Also, if you have manual hubs, you'll still be able to drive home.

A Surf doesn't and they are still cheap enough to fix
