I get a noise like a duff water pump, or a slipping belt at certain revs from the aircon, belt seems tight enough though. Is there a bearing that can be replaced, or is the thing bu**ered?

Are you talking about a rumble (sounds like dry bearing going to the great breakers yard) or is it more of a skreech, especially when the engine and outside air temp is hot when you first put on the aircon? If so, sounds like the same problem I had recently which is a b...ered non-return valve in the circuit inside the car.
Our local aircon guy fixed mine, under warranty, but the cost they quoted to the dealer was about £160 all in to replace the valve and check it all worked OK ...it does now.
Mine also had too much gas in the system which apparently was part of the problem why the valve broke. Should only be about 700g - 800g in the system. Mine had nearly 1kg.
If it's just after the aircon is turned on it could be the problem I had. The aircon guy said the system was over pressurised and that stopped the compressor from turning, hence the skreech as the belt turned on a locked up compressor.
Nope, it sounds like a slipping fan belt or knackered water pump screech, which comes and goes for no apparent reason.

I had a similar problem with both the air con belt and the power steering belt, when it was under load. I had driven at speed down a very dusty farm track and got chalk dust on the vee belts/pulleys, causing them to slip, although the tension was correct and they were less than 6 months old. A mechanic friend suggested a little squirt of spray grease on the belts. I was dubious about it but it worked for me.
