    Re

It's a fifty pence coin mate, dunno what the other thing is.

Looks like a cover for a terminal to me.

    Is it hollow?

its some sort of breather device. theres a couple dotted around the engine.
look around the throttle body as theres about 3 around that.

Yeah all sorted now thank god. Scuffed knuckles and plenty of swearing and cursing and threatening to sell it as soon as it's fixed!

            Cheers.

Having done a 2.4 didn't think 3.0l were as bad but I understand a 2" Body lift will make it easier next time

its just a muffler for exhaust of the VSV solenoids, it will stop crap getting in the end to a degree, but not overly important.

Thanks for that. Can I be cheeky and ask if you can upload a photo of where it goes? I've no idea what a VSV Solenoid is.

Look for "Valve, Vacuum switching" in these diagrams. Threre's two at rear of engine and one under the EGR pipe.

Hi just catching up after the festivities. Thanks very much for posting the "diagrams" but when I click on them they show parts lists and prices. I suspect it's the one from under the EGR pipe just because someone mentioned another post that it's easier to fit the starter without the EGR stuff in the way and seeing as that was what I was doing when I heard it fall off.....

Now I just need to find out what the EGR pipe is and dare I ask - what's an EGR?
