sticking starter motor or battery prob?

I've been having a few probs lately with starting. It's been a bit hit and miss like the starter is sticking, seems worse on cold mornings. This morning what with the snow and all it just wouldn't have it at all. Lot's of "partial turns" of the motor and lots of clicks. I've been checking previous posts and I'd not considered the batteries to be honest, they're both only about 2 years old, one of them has one of those indicator windows in it which is still showing as green - good. Don't know if these indicator windows are reliable or not? Also the battery gauge in the dash - is that reliable? The battery strength is showing as just above half way this is after lots of attempts at starting this morning.

SO I seemed to think that it was the starter, but now reading some of the previous posts I've a little bit of doubt. Still leaning towards the starter being at fault mind you.

Is there an easy way of telling which is at fault?

Also if it's the starter - how on earth do you get at it?

Oh and I tried the old long old heavy screwdriver / hit with hammer on starter - didn't seem to do anything.

if the starter is clicking then i would say it needs a refurb or replacement.I would also think about investing in some new glowplugs if you don't know when they were last done aswell

The glowplugs were done when I got the new batteries about 2 years ago, I don't do many miles a year - so hopefully they should still be ok??

Can you recommend where to get a starter from? Roughtrax?

Is it really as awkward to get at as it looks? Do I tackle it from underneath or from above?

if you want a 2nd hand one then i got one on the breaker in the workshop£60 delivered.
Its better from above and through the wheel arch.The top bolt is the worst to get at but its not to bad overall

It's tempting....there's just no way of knowing how long it'll last........argh.

How quick could you get it to me? Could you take a card payment or would you need a cheque? The thing is 'time' is an issue as i've got a long journey planned on boxing day. A cheque would obviously delay things greatly as you need time for it to clear and all that.

Ok that's good. Sorry to have to ask, but do you know the vehicle it's coming off? Or is the vehicle still in a whole enough state that you can give it a quick test?

i have had the truck running before i broke it for spares and it was turning over no problem.The only reason the truck is being a breaker is i had to take the head off to find out what the problem was and i found the head gasket had split which was causing problems.If it wasnt for this then the truck would of been motd and sold on again as it was in mint condition
the truck was last running 2 weekends ago

how do know its the starter? next time it does it keepthe ingnition swith turned right over then put it in nutral, if it starts then its not the starter, or just put it in nutral then try and start it, again if it starts then its not the starter. it could be the switch and the gear selector.
