  • Another 3.0td Head Gasket Question

Hi ya,have a n plate surf 3.0td,pressurizing cooling system big time, hasn't got hot at all, laid her up straight away. Just wondering on the likelyhood of a cracked head and if so can you normally see it visibly ? or is it crack test to find out..And has anyone has good results with pattern heads, seen quite alot assembled on ebay for a good price.

    Thanks.

been about 70-30% ish, heads to gaskets in my experance on 3.0's

unless really strapped for cash avoid cheap heads. Get mine from Stevo or Roughtrax

Never had crack i couldn't see, heads that you can't see a crack in always test good, sometimes just need a skim to flatten deck.

It normally shows between the valves, Usually No4 first, then 3 and 2 depending how hot was allowed to get. you can ignore small cracks in combustion chamber inserts.

My 1KZ-TE head was cracked inside the combustion chamber. I could´t see it.

I changed the head to (chinese?) one from eBay, now it´s bubbling again. I have driven just 7000 km/4 months after that.

Now I found stories about these eBay heads. Who is that Stevo who sells heads? And are RoughTrax´s heads better than those (chinese?) in eBay? Is that Premier head as good as genuine Toyota head: http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=11&cid=621

I had a stevo head( he's called the Stockport engine co). I had it replaced about 7-8 weeks ago, I've done just over 5000 miles since and used no oil or coolant. It's worth the money IMHO.
          Non intercooled nothing.

Yeah, I found it now (http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/members_p...evo/index.html), I tried yesterday but I couldn´t see it. It´s not there at the all time, there is some HILUX SURF INSURANCE going also.

Does anybody know are those Stevo´s genuine heads (1KZ-TE) better/stronger than original head from mid-90´s? I´ve heard that those are re-designed at some point after. Do Stevo needs an exchange unit (the old head)?

Just because its pressurising the coolant, doesn't mean its anything to do with the head. If it hasn't overheated and isn't blowing clouds of white smoke, I'd say its almost definitely not the head or head gasket.

Remove the radiator cap and put a condom in its place. Start the engine and see if the condom inflates. If it does, your head gasket or cylinder head is knackered, if it doesn't, its more likely just a stuck open thermostat. If the thermostat is stuck open, it will look to all intents and purposes like a bust head gasket when you take the radiator cap off with the engine running.

There's often a lot of doom and gloom on this board and a cracked cylinder head is often the first answer to any question concerning the cooling system (probably with good reason ). It is not always the case.

Coolant was pressurising and blowing out when first started wasn't even hot, wish it was stat!!so it was doom and gloom!,stripped head and had cracks between valves on 2 and 3 and all combustion chambers where cracked, she hadn't got hot at any point or lost any water, the only thing i found a while after i got it was someone had placed a ball bearing in vac to tube to egr, does it have a big effect on cyl head temp?? if you remove egr?? i did put it back to standard. Got a complete new head and set etc..from bridge cylinder heads, think it was an ace head, like ivor searle do,seems fine at mo touch wood! Damm good company actually, had afew 2.4 heads with no probs.
