  • Engine clatter

KZN130 rebuilt (cracked the head at speed - blew the radiator apart - water in no 3 cylinder - brand new head now fitted).

When the garage put it all back together, it started first time . . .but then the noise started. An intermittent (ie no rhythm) clattering when revved. Actually, 'clattering' hardly does it justice - more like a machine gun - almost deafening. Oil pressure is good and it doesn't go away when warm.

Any suggestions welcome (about the cause, that is!).

      Re Fan shroud?

Nah - this is sharp, heavy, frighteningly loud and definitely coming from inside the engine. Thanks for the thought, though.

It's the garages problem then, not yours. Have you handed them any payment yet?

If you mean Woodzie, then yes, more than likely.

If you find the engine is knackered then i have a very good bottom end here for sale if needed. If the garage end up paying for it i'll bump the price up so you get something out of it aswell

                Re: Engine Clatter

OK - garage is a friend - no problems there. Sound is definitely coming from the head area, rather than the bottom end. If it was rod-knock or piston slap, I'd expect it to be at least regular - this isn't. Some have suggested valve timing, others injectors blocked, even valve adjustment. Only does it on rev-up, not there at steady revs.

Definately, maybe, injectors gone. It really makes a loud noise, when reving up. Happened to me lately and i thought i had blown my engine up. Garage can pressure test them or something.

I had a similar problem when mine was done, it was the turbo face had not been cleaned properly, so when he put the exhust back on it didnt seal right, and under revs it sounded a like machine gun. might be worth a check??

Did he tension the timing belt properly? Check the turbo carfully too.

I can't see it being an internal thing or it would happen all the time. How can timing, valve adjustment or bad injectors be intermittant?

                        Problem solved!

Thanks to all who replied. The garage have just told me - very sheepishly - that when they installed the new head they inadvertantly reversed two of the injector feed pipes. Apparently, it's now running "like a watch."

You didn't say it was misfiring!

When I bought my first 2.4 breaker it had a new head fitted but ran rough and clattered badly . Injector timing 180 degrees out !! Never known a diesel run with timing that far out .
