On going "mis fire"

From battery neg to engine lifting hook.

Also have removed, cleaned and replaced body earths.

Can't see it making any difference, (wild stabs seem to be the only suggestions left ), but patch a lead from bat neg to the gearbox/transmission itself.

Now I have noticed that when it misses, there is a relay clicking up behind the glove box.

Any ideas what they are?

If all of the electrics are cutting out, you'll hear all energised relays click. I seem to recall part of the brake circuit is situated behind the glovebox. Press the brake when you get in the Surf and you should hear it click.
