  • Engine coolant drain plug

Quick question, where's the engine drain plug? Found reference to it in the 1KZ-TE service/repair manual, with a 1 inch diagram showing it on the right side of the engine, labeled as "Engine drain plug (on the oil cooler cover)." Can't see anything that looks likely.

    Anyone got a pic?

Got that one, but there's meant to be another on the engine block?

Using the rad I get about 5 litres out, but there's meant to be nearly 10 in there.

Thanks. Looks like a right guddle to get to - what do people normally do to completely drain and flush coolant?

When i did mine the other month, i did the same as you but i disconnected the top 2 hoses that go into the bulkhead & blew into the top pipe which made the coolant come out of the bottom one, then blew through the main top hose so the coolant came out of the main bottom hose. I managed to get about 8 & a half liters back in it, you will never get every last drop out anyway so 1 & half litres of old stuff won't harm it.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Cool, thanks. In fact that drain plug isn't as bad as it looks to get at with a 10mm socket, 6" extension and small hands... Didn't measure it exactly, but it must have been pretty damn close to the 9.5 litre mark, only problem being the drain nozzle is impossible to get a hose on, so half of it drips out wherever it feels like from below the engine!

Drained using that and the radiator, removed and fitted new thermostat then filled at a trickle - no issues with airlocks as far as I can see.
