the 3 litre is quite reliable but is too large for one person to carry, i would recommend an engine hoist... also it would not fit in your pocket.
the 2.4 is a similar size.
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

Now Matt - we know you're bored at home but this is the Tech forum and jokes are not allowed!!!

Depends on your budget Terry - if you can afford it I'd say go 3.0 as it has a bit more power for similar MPG. Have a search around the site - theres lots of opinions been aired on the forum and you'll get a taste of peoples reasons for likes/dislikes etc... Then get out and test drive a few and see what appeals to you. Model numbers are not much guide as almost everything on these trucks was available as an optional extra!

          3 Ltr

I bought 3 Ltr Turbo just before Christmas. It was 1993 with not high mileage.
Its great. Does between 20-22MPG although i drive quite fast especially on M/Ways. Can't help it, used to own a Jag, which i don't miss at all. Even if car looks good etc, have it checked out or take someone along with you who is mecanical. Unlike me i went on test run, loved it, bought it and after a few days noticed floor was wet. Big job to change heater matrix and not cheap.
Also check Air Con as mine was not working, luckily only fuse.
My advice is, ever what you buy, check everything, windows, lights etc so you do not incur extra cost.
GET ONE YOU WILL LOVE IT
          Still Searching,
          Dick Whittington

Similar story for me, went from '93 2.4 SSR-X to a vectra, then 2 Jags and back to a Surf again, 3.0 this time but I'd be almost as happy with my old 2.4 again and still would not really miss the jags.

I had a 2.4 Surf a few years ago - great truck but the 2.4 was not powerful enough for me and had head problems like everyone talks about on this forum! Cost me stacks in the long run!

Drove a Jap subaru twin turbo for a couple of years, killed that and now i'm back to a 3.0 3rd Gen Surf.....dogs danglies!

Go 3.0 TD if you can stretch! - 3.0 petrol runners are seriously uneconomical but fairly pokey!

I had a 1.6 MX5 which was written off, put the payout into a surf.
Managed to get a 3L V6 too, the fuel bill is quite expensive but the sound of the engine makes up for that!

                    3.0TD head cracked - that's quite unusual isn't it?

What was the cause - did it overheat or was it high mileage?

Did you get a diagnosis on the causes as well as a large repair bill?
