  • New fan,now to much heat!

i've just fitted a electric fan yesterday, but now i got too much heat traped under the hood. i'm looking for a way to get some more air flow with out putting spacers under my hood. Is this something i shouldn't be worried about? i just crack my head last week and don't want to do it again. any help would be great, thanks!

    Fit hood vents.
Fit them about three quarters up from the front edge of the hood for best results, directly above the turbo and the same position the other side, kinda like this.......

By what method have you discerned that?

p.s: Vincent, you are British. It's a bonnet.

True, but at least I don't speak the way you type!

I said hood to avoid confusion in a panic situation.

well when i open up the "bonnet" i can feel alot of heat comming out of the engine bay, unlike before when i had the viscous fan. I like the idea of the vents, would this be better than fitting a "bonnet" scoop? Also i was wondering if installing another fan on the front or the rad would be benifical or would it be to much? My plan was to go to the wreckers and take one of a 4runner and hope it would fit.
Also after i imported my surf i installed a boost/vacum guage, but i was disapointed to find out that my turbo is only pushing 4-5psi. i've done lots of research about it but still have no answers. I've found other threads on this but there were no sucessfull replies. Does anyone have an idea what could be going on? when i asked around town the best answer i got is to change the air filter, which i've been unsucessfull in doing because the lack of 3.0 parts in canada. does anyone know the part # for a K&N air filter for my '93 kzn 130?
              thanks
p.s if you havn't noticed i'm working on my British grammer

I was correcting Vince, not yourself. You have a valid excuse for using American terms.

With regards to the heat, I don't think the Surf engine bay could ever be construed as tepid once you've run her for a while. Sounds like you're worrying unnecessarily there. Provided the fan is working and keeping the coolant temperature within the optimal range, I wouldn't worry about it. Also, fitting a front mount fan may impede the airflow rather than help it. If you're that concerned, I'd personally suggest replacing your current fan with one which has a higher CFM? rating. Btw, no idea if you can cross reference any filters from this list over your way, but may be worth trying:

                http://outgoing.bauchan.org/toyota_s...fo/filters.txt

Just make sure to check the sizes of your original against the replacement. Those filters were all cross-referenced against each other and were shown as compatible, but most have never been tried.

If you fit a scoop instead of vents, then the scoop opening should face the windshield...opps, sorry, windscreen otherwise the airflow through the radiator will be dramatically reduced.

Also, you could remove the small rubber 'skirts' that close the gap between the chassis and wheel well to give the hot air somewhere else to go other than down under the truck.

Do a search for wastegate. That should point you in the right direction with regards to sorting that.

do you know where i can find vents like on the bmw in the pic? also i was reading one of your older posts from '06 how you painted some of you undercarriage red when fitting the rear 2" lift. i will be fitting my lift in the next couple of days (or at least trying to) and i wanted to see how yours looked so i could decide if i wanted to paint mine. i've been trying to get a picture of this for the last hour and havn't found anything. could you please post these pictures and maybe a link with lots of pictures on how to install the rear 2" lift.

I used Escort cosworth vents facing rearwards, Good ol E-bay!
                          Intercooler scoop is L200.

                            Hi Guys,

If an intercooler scoop faces forward, why can't a vent?
an intercooler means more power, and therefore, more heat.
It's the same shape, and it lets air in or out. Or am I missing
                            something?

                            Gman.
If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

Because a proper Intercooler scoop is sealed on to the intercooler when the bonnet is closed, thus directing cool air onto the intercooler.

Vents point backwards to allow air to flow out of the engine bay, if they pointed forwards they wouldn't work properly.
