Yes for certain they are the same engine, 1kz-te take a look at roughtrax if you don't believe me.
All the parts you want are the same too.

Just because it's a 1KZ-TE doesn't mean all parts are interchangeable. There are differences sometimes. Part numbers for the two are the same except for the alternator. No idea what the differences are, if any. The only way to find out if they fit and work, is to try them. Toyota has a huge range of alternators and it's a nightmare trying to sort out what will fit what, so I don't even think about it. The difference could be the plug, mounting or simply some internal parts.

Nobody mentioned all the parts being interchangable, i said that the parts required were the same.
Just to clear things up have a look here:
            http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=616&vid=1335
Both altenators i've changed on the kzn130 are exactly the same as the kzn185, i haven't yet seen a 95 without an oval 3 pin connector.

            Water pump for KZN130:
            http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=164&vid=548
            Water pump for KZN185:
            http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=179&vid=548
            Work it out for yourself!

Can't find a turbo but they are prob same too.

              out of interest,
the 2nd and 3rd gen have the 1KZ-TE engine, why are the fuel economy figures for the 3rd gen often quoted as being better?

Just because it fits and works does not make it the same. The alternators for the two are different part numbers. They also have different part numbers for some internal parts. Can you guarantee that a regulator, or any other part for a KZN185 alternator will fit a KZN130 or vice versa if you had to replace it and the mechanic ordered the part, according to the vehicle it was fitted to?

It's weird innit, even with all those extra bits of hairdressing equipment filling the boot.

I stated that the parts were the same, when in fact what i should have said was

"mr hurtinit, please do not go out and replace any parts on your vehicle unless you can find an identical part with the same part number to the original fitted to your vehicle, also be warned that if you need to replace regulators, under no circumstances should you interchange the two unless, once again, the two have identical part numbers (as part numbers never, never change you know) also, should a replacement part for your car become available that is identical to the same part but from a different vehicle, under no circumstances should you use this part. Go out and get yourself some original parts that are vehicle specific and stop trying to save a few quid" please, please forgive my ignorance. I will from now on tell anyone who is looking for parts to send part numbers to toyota and wait until that part is available and then i will personally gaurantee that they will fit!!
If they don't, well tough sh1t! Send it back and hope for the best.

My sincere appologies for misleading people where parts and their corresponding numbers are in no way the same or do the same job!.

I wonder if any one has ever quoted a part number to a dealer and got the wrong part but with the same number or had a part number changed (or superceeded)for the original part number quoted?

                      Was that any help?

Edit: just for the record, if you need a transmission oil cooler for a 1996 3.0 auto surf rad, the 1995 1996cc (2.0l)auto chrysler neon one is exactly the same, but i must state, they DO NOT HAVE THE SAME PART NUMBER! therefore they are not the same and must not be used for any vehicle other than the vehicle they were intended to be used on.

I simply stated that the alternators have different part numbers, both for the complete unit and some internal parts. Different internal parts will result in a different number for the complete alternator. The alternator will quite likely fit both models and at no time did I say they wouldn't. I was just making everyone aware of possible differences.

A blanket statement saying "It should fit because they are both a 1KZ-TE" is crap, because they don't always. As for superseded numbers, this could be just a change in part number and no change to the part or it could be an actual change in how the part is constructed or the material used. I could quote a few of these but I couldn't be bothered so if buying parts then it's always a good idea to order them for the specific vehicle using the Model and Frame numbers, especially if buying genuine. If not then cross reference the genuine numbers.
