guess the option is to drill it and put a bolt in so it is locked all the time, see if that changes this..

          changes what?
the difference between a working or a killed engine?
I mean seriously, what are u on about?
If the fan spins it works.... don't it... there is nothing else to do..
If the truck is hot u probably have another problem mate..

NOW THEN MATT WHERE ARE U...!!!

Nope, a viscous fan will always spin, but not necessarilly work.

The fan is probably not working properly unless it's been overhauled recently.

A quick way to check is to turn the fan by hand when the engine is cold, you'll feel some resistance. Now go for a run, say 20 minutes, stop the engine then try to turn the fan, it should have much more resistance than it did before. If it doesn't, it needs overhauled.

Another way to check is to go for a 20 minute run, stop (but keep the engine running), pop the bonnet, then, keeping an eye on the fan, stop the engine. The fan should stop, more or less, with the engine; if it doesn't it needs overhauled.

Putting one bolt in a spinning part is stupidity.

                  Did someone mention viscous fans?

As Albannach mentioned, little resistance when cold, more resistance when hot.

What problem are you having, specifically?

well the fan works fine, i have taken it for a beating today up and down the hills around bradford, given it some pastie in L, and it seems to be behaving its self.

the problem i had was it was loosing water when used hard, i have fited a new head, headgasket, waterpump, radiator, headbolts etc etc and it was still losing the water from header tank, but it looks like it could have been a air lock as everthing seems ok, time will tell when i pull my very eavy trailer up the M62 towards Saddleworth moor...over 1200 feet above sea level, looks like i will have to sell it anyway now as the legal towing capacity aint enough, i`m gutted because it has cost a fortune to do the work, and is a very clean and tidy motor, looks like it have never seen any offroad use and drives lovely....:-(
