  • Coolant Quantity Question

    Hi everyone.
My first post is a question.
    I have a 1993 3.0L TD Auto KZN130.

I recently emptied my cooling system, and flushed it through. Upon refilling, I was only able to get 5 litres of water/coolant in, plus whatever the expansion bottle holds. After a long drive with the heater on hot, I re-checked the level, and it is still full at the rad & expansion bottle.. Is this correct. I had always thought a KZN130 held 10 litres of coolant?
Reason for question is I have a strange overheating problem.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re

You are very unlikely to flush ALL of it out.

There is always a fairly good amount left in the block after flushing!

Put a GOOD QUALITY coolant cleaner in the system and run it for a while.

Remove the thermostat and wedge a hose in the main pipe "water-tightly" (USE JUBILEE CLIPS), flush back and forward until clean water comes out like a fountain!

    And then some!

You will be shocked at the crap that gets flushed out!

Putting clean water in and letting it "dribble" out of the drain hole is not "Surf Flushin".

    You need a powerful hose!

Out of interest, why did you drain it? Just a service?

As said, you may have some crud in there that's blocking it up.

      What's the problem, just overheating?

I thought I may have an airlock in the system, hence the overheating. I also took the heater pipes off today, and flushed it through. To start with there was only a trickle, then a good flow. I can hear the water circulating around the heater matrix now when driving.. Funny swooshing, and gurgling noises. I guess it was a bit restricted before.
        Will re-check for overheating tomorrow.

        Thanks for the replies.

I like your avatar, have you got a Lexus V8 in your 5" lifted, custom made vented bonnet and roof mounted aerial, de-chromed burgundy truck too?

If it's gurgling, there's still air in it.

My truck does look like the avatar, but if that is yours, sorry about that.
                  I have removed it
