winding up transmission

My wheels are skipping, and bringing me to a halt when using lots of lock, both forwards and in reverse, drives ok in a straight line though.

its a 95 model, and no i havent got it in 4 wheel drive, although it is showing all the signs of being so....

Jack the front up and see if you can turn the wheels. Assuming it's in 4wd, it's probably a vaccum or electrical fault. If you need it as a daily driver, take the front prop out whilst you investigate.
