  • What goes clunk around corners

My KZN185 makes a very faint clunk when going round corners.
It sounds like its coming from the front offside wheel area.

The truck has done 65k miles.

Is this the start of something more serious or should I just keep the stereo turned right up (it seems to go away then!).

    Cheers

PS. Anyone in the Plymouth / South Devon / Dartmoor area know of any places (or meetings) I can visit to legally get muddy. Ive seen a few places off the roads, but they seem to be within the Dartmoor National Park boundary and I dont really want to go and ???? some ranger off.

Don't shoot me; is the wheel bolted on properly?! Sounds stupid I know, but it's the obvious stuff that catches people [like me] out!
Anything loose in the engine bay - batteries sliding?
Anything loose underneath - ie exhaust etc?
Other than that I would start looking at bushes (anti roll bar?) and ball joints etc ??

Might be the infamous steering stops! Just grease them!

No steering stops on the 3rd gen Surfs, they don't need them as they have a steering rack.

it could be the steering stop rubber which just needs a blob of grease or the tripod joint on the drive shaft.

Check out linda and tony site for some off road fun

is it the steering clunking? (i.e. when you turn the wheel) or it it when you're actually cornering? (i.e. weight shifts to one side and parts move about)

                    Clunking when turning

                    Hi Jon,
Is the clunking only when ur on full lock or nearly full lock cornering....if so i may well be ur cv joint, about £75 per side, thats taking that u have checked that the wheel etc is secure. if it was the lock stops then its more of a scraping noise only on full lock as the suspension moves, and that is easly solved with a blob of grease. Let us know what u find out.

Clunking when I lightly turn the wheen and the weight shifts from one side to the other. Sometimes at speed, sometimes slow, sometimes, sharp corners, sometimes gentle corners. I'm stumpped on this one, nothings loose or rattling inside the engine bay or wheel areas, battery is tight, no tools left in te engine bay.

Still sounds like worn bushes, somewhere...
I've got to investigate the front suspension of mine at the weekend as I've discovered some clattering noise from the right when I go over pot holes etc.
Also just discovered some clunking from the front when in 4wd. buggah!
