  • rear fog lights

my surf has a rear fog light within the rear light cluster last year at the MOT station the mechanic said that i will need a seperate one due to it not being bright enough does anyone know the MOT requirements for the brightness/any issue with the fog light operationscheers

If you have to fit a separate one and like going offroad please do NOT fit a pendulum type lamp.

Several guys here have done great looking installations in the bumper.

I think you have to have around 25w bulbs for rear Fog

there are restrictions on the maximum height, and also how close it can be to the other lights i believe.

If you have to go for a pendulum light just fit it as close to the O/S rear mud flap as possible.

Anyone know what the actual restrictions here are? We knocked the light off (pendulum type), and I bolted it back on directly to the back of the bumper instead, above where it was. Not exactly pretty, but it's functional. Will it be too high/in the wrong place now?

Just type UK vehicle lighting regulations into Google.
Mine are fitted into the bumper with no questions asked at MOT time, and the rear bumper is five inches higher than stock.

From memory, it's the construction and use regulations that say where the lamp should be fitted, the MoT test only check they work.

I didn't use any, I just sanded it to take the shine off wiped it over with cellulose thinners and sprayed with satin black Hammerite, two coats. The second coat should be applied thirty minutes after the first.

Thanks for the link. I guess the 'Must bear an approval mark' covers that - you can't make your own unless you have it individually approved by whoever approves these things.

This is more useful: It must be between 25cm and 1m off the ground, on or outside the centre-line of the vehicle, and at least 10cm away from any brake light.

Sounds like you may have found a slightly anal tester there.
